Has your organisation installed hearing loops?
31 May 11
Did you know that there are over 4 million Australians suffering from a hearing impairment? In May 2011 legislation determined that under the Disability Discrimination Act all large venues must provide adequate facilities to any person suffering from a disability. Does your venue meet these standards and have a hearing loop installed and operational?
There are many different causes of hearing loss, the most common is age related. However there are a large number of young people affected by hearing loss, the latest estimates are around 11% of the population. This demonstrates that whether your venue is a function hall, or a live music venue there will be patrons that suffer from a hearing impairment and will require a hearing loop.
The most common form of hearing loop is the Audio-Frequency Induction Loop System, these operate by broadcasting a signal over an integrated induction loop. Where hearing aids increase the volume of all sounds, hearing loops are able to amplify only the content being transmitted over the audio system. The benefit of using a hearing loop is that only the content that the user wishes to have amplified will be transmitted, which helps to eliminate ambient noise and other distractions. A hearing loop allows people with a hearing impairment to listen to lectures, movies or announcements accurately without interference from amplified ambient noise.
Hearing loops can be installed in any size room, be it a large function venue, a small meeting room or even a transaction counter (for example a reception desk or bank teller). Ideally a hearing loop should be integrated into the design when a room is constructed; however there are a number of solutions to retro fit an existing room. The skilled team of installers at InSight Systems has experience working in all of these situations and can help you find the right solution for your building.
