What is IPTV?

IPTV technology

IPTV is a means of delivering video, music and data over a controlled IP (internet protocol) local network.
Triple play convergence of voice, internet and TV services enable the user to access all three contents through the one cable.

There are four types of IPTV: Internet IPTV, Telecommunications IPTV, Broadcast IPTV and Closed or building IPTV.

A key area being explored by businesses such as hotels and service apartments is Closed or building IPTV. Essentially, it is a local network that enables multiple uses to access various data at one time, from a single electronic device.

How does it work?

The building will receive or create content (Free to Air TV, movies, Foxtel, advertising messages etc), managed by a single computer or codec. It can then be instantaneously accessed around the building, via the high quality cable infrastructure.

The user is then free to access multiple TV channels, movies channels, teleconferencing, shopping online and download data simultaneously via a handheld remote, iPhone touch or similar device.

What are the benefits of IPTV?

  • With content being distributed internally directly over the LAN, there are no issues with using internet bandwidth.
  • The content controller will have the knowledge of what content is being accessed, opening up opportunities to understand clients better and provide targeted service and advertising messages throughout their current and future bookings.
  • The hotel or apartment building can interact directly with the guests via IPTV, offering greater convenience and service.

IPTV gives you revenue opportunities through the ability to charge for content and charging advertisers for targeting messages and sponsorship of content.

The future

IPTV is a high capacity, secure network. It is built for the future and predicted to be able to stream 3D TV, with future developments into personal TV channels, portals (weather, sports etc.), sharing of photo's, movies, social networking and inter-guest communication and gaming.

As it further develops we see it expanding into commercial businesses due to it enabling their customers and clients to work more freely.
