Choosing the Right Screen Size

1 Sep 08

So what is the most suitable screen size for my room?

Several factors come into play including size of the room, sitting position, height of the seats and the throw capability of your projector's lens.

Of course you will have your own personal preferences about the function of the room and how you want the screen to look.

We have found that this is an excellent guide to start with and then we can discuss customising it to take into account any personal preferences.

The following diagrams depict the calculations you can use for education, environment and home theatre environments.

The bottom measurement on each diagram indicates the ideal height from the floor to the bottom of screen, as a guide only.

These standards apply to both 4:3 and 16:9 screen formats.

Meeting Room or Classroom Example

If the closest viewer is 3m from screen and the furthest viewer is 8m away.

 Choosing the right Screen Size

Max Screen Height = 3m ÷ 2 = 1.5m (height of screen)

Min Screen Height = 8m ÷ 6 = 1.3m scren

Home Theatre Example

If the viewer wishes to sit 4m from the screen:

Choosing the right Home Theatre Screen

Screen Height= 4m ÷ 3 = 1.3m (height of screen)

After using the guide we can help you consider the desired function and aesthetics of the room, characteristics of the projector and available screen sizes.
