What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, "What are you doing?" by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called "tweets", to your friends, or "followers." (NewsBlaze, 2011)

Why Twitter?
Due to the limitation in the length of Tweets users must be very concise, as a user this makes it very easy to digest a large amount of information very quickly. Similarly because the length of a tweet is so short users are able to very quickly tweet as events happen. It was recently publicised that New Yorkers received tweets about the approaching earthquake quicker than the earthquake could approach!

Twitter is a great tool to get real-time and up-to-date information about a range of topics. At present there are over 200 million tweets per day, so there will be like-minded people tweeting about your areas of interest, no matter how obscure!
