Southern Cross Station is a major railway station in Docklands, Melbourne, servicing over 1.2 million people every week. The station operates at a central point for both regional and interstate connections, seamlessly integrating with the Melbourne tram, bus, and taxi services.

InSight Systems was approached by Southern Cross Station for a Managed AV solution to deliver and install new AV equipment throughout the PA system. Our team, excited for this project, aimed to provide excellent commuter experiences through clear and reliable communication via a seamless public address system.

THE BRIEF

The InSight Systems team was engaged to plan and deliver the addition of two wireless roaming microphones for per Metro train line platform, namely platforms 9-10, 11-12, 13-14.

When planning the installation across the Metro train line platforms, our Managed AV Services Engineering and Projects team service faced the challenging task of addressing the highly complex infrastructure at Southern Cross Station, with the existence of conflicting wireless activity and interference.

The primary objective was to identify the most optimal and dependable hardware placement, ensuring seamless connectivity to the central PA system while integrating with the existing network infrastructure, safeguarding the uninterrupted daily operations of the train platforms.

THE SOLUTION

To address the unique challenges presented by Southern Cross Station’s complex infrastructure and the need for reliable wireless connectivity, our solution included the installation of Advanced Antenna Technology at each Public information display structure (PID). Our ­­­­­­­­­­Managed AV Services Engineering and Projects team took into account important considerations including distance, interference, and available frequency ranges.

A major part of the project’s installation success, was the close collaboration with other trades and services involved in the project, fostering a coordinated effort to deliver the required infrastructure. Working together to achieve the critical importance of uninterrupted daily station operations, we worked to an after-hours schedule minimising disruptions ensuring passengers journey continued to be seamless.   

THE RESULT

Since installation, our client has expressed high satisfaction with the uninterrupted functionality of the systems, meeting all specified requirements across the Metro platforms at Southern Cross Station. The successful deployment has ensured clear communication to all commuters without disruption to their daily travels.
