Study@RMIT – Audio Visual LED Solutions

LED Wall in building foyerOne of RMIT’s most visited buildings, Study@RMIT (or Building 22) is a thoroughly refurbished relic from 1912 and the gateway building to the dispersed RMIT city campus, where prospective local and international students apply to study at the University.

Originally built for the Singer Sewing Machine company in 1912, the building now boasts an incredible array of technology to spark the imagination of visitors, multiple interactive touchpoints and an environment that welcomes new students to the RMIT experience. Located on one of the most prominent corners in Melbourne’s CBD, across the road from the State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Central Station, Study@RMIT is accessible to a must-visit for anyone visiting the area.

The Beginning

This technology-rich showcase was designed so that RMIT could engage with the public and industry partners. The existing fabric of the building was largely disguised but through the project, RMIT sought to peel back the layers of subsequent renovations to expose the beauty of the original building. Layers of plaster were removed to expose the redbrick internally and mirrored window reveals act to draw the activity of the outside in while enhancing the sense of space and light.

Audio Visual LED Solutions – Technology Overview

An inviting entry was created through the seamless flow of pavers from outside in, to a double-height void. The entrance is flanked by a 6m high immersive NEC LED video wall allowing RMIT to digitally curate content for potential students. The layout of the screen departed the typical widescreen layout most are familiar with and was designed to mimic the shape of the RMIT logo.

A ‘Technology Cave’ was created to allow visitors to immerse themselves in 270-degree content produced to engage and excite. The ability to step inside a digital space and be surrounded by both video and audio content allows RMIT to demonstrate their cutting edge education technology and for students to really understand how RMIT can assist them in building their future.

The Client Perspective

Formerly known as Info Corner, the space was renamed Study@RMIT to align with University branding and provide external audiences with context as to what the space is all about.

A complete redesign of the architectural fit-out means the space is now a more welcoming and functional environment for integrated experiences. Visitors are greeted with a spacious open plan foyer, upgraded audiovisual technology and an impressive wooden design feature that blankets the high ceiling.

There is also a level of visual transparency within the split-level space, allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of those on the upper levels as they navigate through the various technology-rich spatial zones for tailored interactions.

Strategically-positioned screens cycle through carefully curated marketing content, taking advantage of Building 22’s prime, high foot traffic position, and InSight Systems has ensured that the audio visual LED solutions integrated into the building enhance each user’s experience of the new space.

Chief Operating Officer Dionne Higgins shared her excitement in seeing the revitalised space come to life. “Well done to all of the team who worked so hard on this project. We now have a front door to RMIT that we can all be proud of,” she said.
